O come, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (Prayer for Lent, based on Hebrews 12:2)

This Lent, we will use the metaphor of eyesight to examine how the various people in Mark’s Gospel viewed Jesus during His Passion. In most cases, they misunderstood who He was and what He was doing; then again, sometimes by faith people did recognize Him correctly.

We have these forty days of Lent in which we may look within ourselves as people of faith in our day. How are we like or unlike the people who saw Jesus in the flesh? Most important, as we gather for worship, we will see what Jesus has done to save us from our sins by His holy, precious blood and innocent sufferings and death.

Take this opportunity to invite a friend as we gather each Wednesday night during the Lenten Season. Starting at 6:00 pm on Ash Wednesday (February 26th), we will recall our mortality by receiving ashes on our foreheads as we begin our journey to the cross at Good Friday (April 10th), and the empty tomb at Easter Sunday (April 12th). Each Wednesday throughout Lent (starting on Wednesday, March 4th) we will gather at 5:15 pm to eat a simple supper together and enter into a somber, but hopeful, period of worship at 6:00 pm.
